Nestled in the heart of the Southwest, Taos, New Mexico offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. This picturesque location provides the perfect backdrop for our trail rides, where you can explore diverse terrains and witness breathtaking views. Whether you're a seasoned rider or a beginner, Taos offers an unforgettable experience that connects you with the spirit of the Wild West.

Here are some ways to go to Rio Grande Stables, NM. From Santa Fe, NM: Follow US-84 W/US Hwy 285 N and NM-68 N to NM-240 E in Ranchos de Taos follow Thru Taos to El Prado continue north on US 64 / HWY 522 for approximately 15 miles. Stables located on the left. From Taos, NM: Travel north from Taos on US 64/NM 522. Remain driving north for approximately 15 miles: you will pass a Carson National Forest sign, and a few minutes after that there is a sign for Cebolla Mesa and a blue metal bus stop on the right-hand side of the road, and a big Rio Grande Stables sign on the left. Turn there, ignore the “not suitable for passenger cars” sign. You’ll see our pull-in within seconds. From Colorado Springs, CO: Follow I-25 S and US-160 W to CO-159 S in Costilla County. Continue on CO-159 S. Drive to 74 NM-522 S just south of Questa, NM. Stables will be on the right across from a blue bus stop.

How do I get there?

We have a strict 7-Day cancellation policy. A deposit in the amount of 50% of your total trip cost is required to hold your reservation. We do NOT keep any card information on file.

What is your cancellation policy?

Long pants & closed-toe shoes are a requirement to ride. The weather has the ability to change fast so be prepared and don’t be shy get your inner cowboy on! Jeans & boots are most highly recommended. Leggings do not hold grip in the saddle, and we also ride through rugged terrain so you want pants that offer you more protection! Tennis shoes are ok, but please no soft-soled or rubber shoes (crocs, water shoes, sandals). For sunny or warmer weather, we highly recommend lightweight long sleeves & bandanas. Cowboys don’t cover themselves up to look cool, they do it for sun protection. Save your tanning for the river.

What should I wear?

Water! Water, water, water. You need one liter of water per hour of riding in handheld bottles: you must be able to hold and drink your water while holding the reins while riding. No gallon jugs, CamelPaks, or backpacks. This is non-negotiable! Sunglasses & a hat: if you are 18+ & opting out of a riding helmet, wear a wide-brimmed hat! We recommend having a lightweight rainjacket on hand in case the afternoon blows in some rain! You can bring a treat for your horse too, they like things like apples and carrots.If you like your ride, kiss your horse and tip your guide! Our guides work hard to prepare a great ride for you, so gratuity is appreciated. You can bring cash or leave a tip on your credit card, or some of our wranglers have Venmo/Zelle.

What should I bring?

We ride rain or shine, but we do not ride in unsafe weather conditions (i.e. lightning) or on unsafe trail conditions. We encourage you to bring a rain jacket, but we do offer ponchos if needed.

Do we ride in rain or snow?

Yes, in fact anyone under the age of 16 is required to wear an equestrian style helmet. If you currently have an equestrian helmet, feel free to bring it if it makes you feel more comfortable. Personal equestrian helmets must be inspected and given the “OK” by one of our wranglers. Bike helmets are not allowed. If the rider is 16 or 17, the parent/guardian may choose if they must wear one or not. Helmets are optional to everybody 18+. If you choose not to wear a helmet, bring a hat for sure!! (One that fits snug on your head and won’t blow away! Horses don’t like flying objects)

Are helmets offered?

For the safety of our guests and horses, our rides are only walking rides. It’s much more enjoyable to walk your horse on a scenic trail, anyway!

Do we get to gallop?

We do have a weight limit of 250 lbs. This is for the safety of the horse, as well as the rider.

Is there a weight limit?

Nope! We do provide a satchel adequate for all of your goodies for your trail ride adventure.

Are backpacks allowed?

No. Under no circumstances do we allow this. Our trails are rocky and rugged. Please know each stables has it’s own specific age minimum.

Can my child ride on the same horse as me?

Yes!! If you have a handheld camera (film, DSLR, etc), it needs to have a cross-body strap. Please don't bring extra-big/bulky cameras, as they are more likely to bump against the saddle and can be uncomfortable to ride with. NO DRONES OR SELFIE-STICKS.

Can I bring my camera?

No, we cannot accomodate your furry friends on our property. You will need to secure your pet somewhere (AirBnB, friend, family member, etc) BEFORE your ride!

I brought my pet with me. Do you have a place I can leave them while we ride?

We operate yearly late May-early October. When contacting us outside of the season, please specify that you are looking at booking a ride in New Mexico as we have a year-round operation in Texas!

When is the stables open for the season?

No, we only offer guided trail rides. Also, we are not open in the winter during hunting season

Our operation is based in Texas, so when contacting us, please let us know you are looking at our New Mexico stables! Upon calling or emailing about a ride, it will help us greatly to know pertinent info about the riders in your group, such as but not limited to: ages, weights, riding experience, any medical/physical conditions that might be impacted by the fun athletic activity of horse riding. Our lovely office staff do their best to get you booked for a ride that best suits your groups' needs! Active Military Service Members receive a 10% discount, so let us know before booking your ride! Thank you for your service! If you call outside of office hours (7A-4P MT), please leave us a voicemail or send us an email, and we'll respond as soon as we can! DO NOT call the emergency numbers listed on our voicemail to try to book a ride...those numbers are for emergencies ONLY, i.e. you drove by our stables and the horses are out of the pen running free as the wind. WHERE WE RIDE Cebolla Mesa ( Suh-Boy-Yuh ) Meeting point : Our headquarters on NM 522: #7 USFR 9 at the turno for Cebolla Mesa How to get there: We are about 25 minutes North of Taos on HWY 522. When you get close, you will see the sign for “Lama”. You’ll turn left at the turno for Cebolla Mesa (ignore the sign that says “Not suitable for passenger cars”), we we will be on the left after the cattleguard. Taos Ski Valley (TSV) Meetinoft point: Bison Parking Lot in the TSV How to oftet there: From the intersection of HWY 522 & HWY 64, it’ll take you about 30 minutes to get to the TSV. Our truck and trailer will be parked in the Bison Parking lot, where the blue TSV shuttle cars are usually parked. Please note: your wrangler is hauling the animals from our HQ, so it takes them about 45 minutes to get to the Ski Valley. Las Vistas de Questa (VDQ) Meetinoft Point: Las Vistas de Questa trailhead, Questa NM How to oftet there: Meet us at Rio Grande Stables HQ for check-in and then you’ll follow your wrangler/horses to the trailhead, which is about a 10-15 minute drive. Disclaimer Cell service is unreliable in this area. Load your maps accordingly before you hit the road while you have service/wifi. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of phone maps or various GPS directions. Our meeting points are right off of main roads so it’s pretty simple to find us. Call us if you have any issues! Make sure you arrive ON TIME & PREPARED for your ride, with each rider having their own bottles of water and wearing the proper attire. What do people say about Rio Grande Stables?

This was our third ride with Rio Grande stables for myself and my older granddaughter (now 13), and the second for my younger granddaughter (9). We've always had a good time. Great for new or inexperienced riders, the terrain is easy, and it's a pretty area. I recommend the morning ride if that fits your plans — it's cooler and there's less chance of a storm.

Shelby was great! She was very personable and made the ride a fun experience. Horses were all well behaved (thankfully) and the scenery was truly beautiful. We took the 2 hour morning trail ride and it was just long enough before it got too hot out. Glad I added this to my trip!

My family and I had an amazing experience with Armando! He was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to educate us before we headed out on our ride. EXPERIENCE:The cowboys that led our 2 hour ride in Questa were so friendly and kind! They went through all the safety procedures and made sure each one of us were comfortable with our horses! It was a bit warm outside, but they made sure that we had plenty of stops so we can drink water from our water bottles.The guides did not provide much history or information during the ride, but they were very social and gave us a lot of local recommendations.RESERVATIONS:We made reservations the day before and had 0 issues since it was an off season in Sep! The woman I spoke to on the phone (Montie Mudd) was not very friendly though! I asked if they were taking reservations and she made a rude comment about how reservations are the “only” way to ride. I had my phone on speaker and everyone in the room heard her tone of voice and made a comment about it afterwards.I’m so glad that the guides were nice though since Montie left a bad taste with us.

We had a great time riding with Shelby! The horses were really easy to handle and super friendly, even with our kids (9 and 12). Shelby was an awesome guide - she pointed out cool things along the way and chatted with us, but also gave us time to just enjoy the trail. She took a nice family photo for us too. The 2-hour ride was perfect for us. We went through some forested areas and some open spaces, which was a nice mix. We got lucky with great weather and bringing 1L of water each worked out well. I'd definitely recommend this for anyone wanting to see New Mexico's beautiful terrain on horseback. Really fun way to experience the area!

Rio Grande stables took us on an amazing ride. The horses were well trained and friendly. My family of four loved every minute of our morning ride. I felt safe and comfortable with our wranglers- Shelby and James squared. They were friendly and knowledgeable about the area. They made sure we were comfortable and having a good time. Wife and I went for a 2-hour evening ride in August. Our guide Shelby took great care of us and made us feel safe and relaxed. The animals appeared healthy and happy, and Shelby was passionate about their welfare. We didn't do anything faster than a walk and the trail was pretty easy, but the gorgeous mountain views, intoxicating clean air, and blissful quiet made the ride anything but boring.

My daughter and I did the evening ride with Ella, and it was amazing. I was nervous because it had been years since I had ridden a horse, and my daughter had never ridden one as an adult. Ella was fantastic, and so was my horse Duncan. Ella picked out the right horse for me, and it was an easy, relaxing, and fun experience. My daughter had a great time too. The view was spectacular, and the other family we were with was very nice. They were much more experienced than us and we all had a good time. I broke my ankle while hiking last weekend and EMS was able to get a lovely mule named Lady from Rio Grande Stables to give me a ride out. Lady was lovely and I'm not sure I would have gotten out of the gorge without her. Incredibly smooth ride, more comfortable than the ambulance ride! A great experience all around! The horses are obviously well trained and cared for. Evo is a wonderful wrangler and guide. His jokes aren’t bad either! I’m very comfortable around horses but don’t have a lot of consistent riding experience. My wife, sister-in-law, and I went on a trail ride this morning and had a great time. We're all in our mid 60's and none of the three of us has much experience on horseback. Actually, none of us has ridden any in over 25 years. Our guide, Bekka, was very attentive and pleasant and watched out for the safety of everybody on the ride at all times. The instructions we got from Bekka prior to the ride really helped. The scenery was very pretty and the horses were all very well behaved and easy to handle. I and my partner had not been on a horse in about 40 years. The horses are so well trained and experienced that the ride was easy. Well, minus their desire to stop and eat but I can't fault them for wanting a tasty snack while they work, lol. Danny, our guide, is kind, patient, and informative. I'd been wanting to do this for over a decade; my partner was less enthusiastic. However, after the experience, my partner is totally willing to do this again and I thank Danny and Rio Grande Stables for that. Bart was a delight of a trail rider to lead us on our 2 hour trail ride. He was an excellent instructor on how to ride a horse if you've never rode before. I've ridden before just been a very long time, and if it's been a long time since you've ridden, I recommend only going for the 2 hours, which was almost too long for me. But I was originally gonna sign us up for a 3-hour ride, which I'm so glad they didn't have any openings for that one. Otherwise, I would've been done at 2 hours because my butt hurt after an hour and a half hours.

When we arrived for our 3 hour ride, we were delighted to discover that we were the only 2 people on this ride. Our guide was Shelby, and even though we have some riding experience, she thoroughly explained all the safety issues and gave us each a quick lesson before heading out. We rode to the Rio Grande gorge. The horse and mules knew the way and so we were able to enjoy the beautiful scenery instead watching our feet as we do when hiking. This is my first time going on a horse back ride. It was a first time for my husband too. Right from the beginning our wrangler Zoey made sure we were comfortable and at ease. Awesome! Our guides were very friendly knowledgeable and professional. The horses were beautiful, very friendly, well trained and knew what to do. My husband had made reservations for himself, our 3 kids, my sister and I to go horseback riding for my birthday. Such a wonderful birthday present, having fun and making memories! Great idea for horse lovers! It was almost a 3 hour drive from our home in the South Valley of Albuquerque and we got stuck in traffic for at least a half hour because of an accident in the gorge so we called and let them know that we were running late and they waited for us and we're very understanding and gracious about it. They still gave us our full hour and a half ride even though we arrived late. We highly recommend Rio Grande Stables trail riding for an amazing experience to enjoy with family or friends! We took a two hour trail ride with Janelle. We are a family of first time riders, Janelle helped us feel confident and comfortable. She introduced us to our horses and gave us some information about their personalities and history. The ride itself was beautiful and left us feeling like we really got to ride horses, not just travel a well tripod path that every group for the past ten years has taken. We rode through sage brush and up and down hills, into the piñon and to an amazing view of the Red River Gorge. Our family is already talking about when we can come back and do it again.

This was the best trail ride I have ever taken. Janelle was an excellent guide, she introduced us to our horses and their personalities. Then we took a beautiful ride through the mesa and foothills to the Rio Grande Gorge. This is not your typical well trampled trail, we went up and down hills and through the sagebrush. It was a beautiful ride at a comfortable place for beginners. Very memorable two hours and we are already talking about when we can do it again.

This tour is in depth for 4 hours, Matt was great and explained everything we needed to know, you get to see the red river, and just ride the land. We were allowed to stop and take photos at certain points and we weren’t disappointed. The horses Matt had picked for us were great after giving a little information about each one of us he got it spot on. Everything about the stables were amazing. Great ride thank you. Well worth every penny, this is a must do if your in the area.

We had a horse back ride scheduled for the day in the Cibola National Forest but our ride cancelled without letting us know. Do we looked around at the last minute and found Rio Grande stables -- a 2.5 hr drive back through Santa Fe towards Taos. It was a gorgeous drive to Taos and the ride itself was marvellous. My sister and I took the 2-hour trail ride with Amelia yesterday and would not have changed a thing. I have taken other trail rides over the years but this by far was the best. Amelia was our wrangler. She was exceptional in her knowledge and care of the horses and the customer service she provided. She was very thorough in her explanations and safety check before the ride began. Rio Grande Stables breeds and trains their own horses so she knew every personality trait of the horses we were riding. Amelia took great care in picking the horses for our ride based on our experiences and how they got along with each other. It was obvious that our horses were very well treated. My son and I had the pleasure to have Dakota teach us how to ride and was knowledgeable about the area. Dakota and Monte made sure my son and I were safe before riding. We had an amazing 1h ride with Peyton and Hailey in one of the scenic trails close to the stables. This was the first time riding for our 13 years old twins and my wife and I have ridden only once before. However these horses are so well trained and well behaved and Peyton guided as so well that we greatly enjoyed the ride with absolutely no issues for the beginners we are. Would definitely recommend to anyone including absolute first timers. Great experience for families with kids and very reasonable prices too.

We recently visited Taos, NM for our 10yr Anniversary. We new we were going to do a horse riding trip bc we've enjoyed them in the past. We went with Rio Grande Stables bc it was priced right and researching the reviews, I was so happy we did. Kelly was our tour guide for the trip and she was awesome. We had an outstanding 3 hour ride with Peyton, who was professional and knowledgeable, about the horses and the area. She was attentive to our needs without being overbearing, which is not easy when experienced riders come on one of these types of rides. It takes an exceptional guide to accurately access the skill level of her clients. As a long time 4-H Horse Club leader and horseman, I was encouraged by the condition and temperment of the horses who's most serious offense was to grab a bite of grass, from time to time, like all horses. We felt totally safe while admiring the Rio Grande Gorge, surrounding mountains and other scenery. My only regret is that this area is too far from home for me to visit easily or bring a group of young riders to enjoy the mountains.

We had a perfect three hour ride with Peyton, who was informative, patient and attentive. There is nothing about this ride that I would change. Very smooth and exciting adventure for a first time rider. Horses are robust with lots of personality and handle the rocky terrain well. We felt comfortable riding after brief initial instructions. I want to first say that this was my first time ever riding a horse. I was very nervous before I arrived, but was quickly calmed by the friendly staff and the tame horses. The horses were extremely well mannered during our 3 hour ride, and the trail we took was beautiful. Our guide was very friendly and I would recommend her to anyone wanting to go on a horseback riding trip. I took the trip with my girlfriend, and we were joined on the trail by two grandparents and their young granddaughter. Every one seemed to really enjoy the ride. The views were spectacular.

Trail had some interesting treachery built in, but always safe and horses were steadily sure-footed. We embarked on a three-hour ride ( a just-right for most who just want a full experience. I trust even greater beauty lay ahead for the longer ride.) Directions good, yet unfamiliar to actual town/lodging area vs. lift area makes for some confusion when coming up from Taos. Staff friendly. Reservations and pre-ride without any problem. Outfitted and ready to mount. Horses were strong and tame. Like most trail horses, they know what to do with minimal prompting. Even the occasional rider can get by. And here comes Joe, our cowboy. What a nice, unassuming man. Started up the toughest part of the trail and the beauty begins. A slow pace made for a happy horse and a happy rider. Steep at times. Sights were at times amazing. Peaceful, relaxing, refreshing outdoors. Joe spoke when spoken to, though offered good information about the area and riding life of a cowboy. He surprised us with playing a guitar and singing. Adept. Not cheesy, but actually pretty cool. I arranged for my wife and I to do the four hour tour with lunch. Two hours on the horses with a lunch break and then two more hours of riding. It was an amazing trip and Kent, our guide, was so good with making sure that we had a great trip. The picnic lunch was a really nice touch and was way more then just cold cuts and packaged snacks. If I have the opportunity to be in Taos again I will definitely do another horseback ride and it will definitely be with Rio Grande Stables!
